Why Dedicated Servers Are Different From A Normal Computer

There are many people who wonder if there is any difference between a dedicated server and their home PC. When choosing to have own hosting for either your home or office PC, you are bound to encounter this query. Much of the hardware used is similar, the specs of a dedicated server are significantly high. Though the home computer can be used as a server, it will not be able to deliver the same capabilities as a dedicated server.

There is a notable difference in performance, capabilities and reliability. The weight in similarities is the same as the similarities between walking and driving. This is due to the fact that much as you may get to your designated place, one of the options will be highly inconvenient and less effective.

Essentially, home PCs are meant to be used as work stations to assist in working on projects either by an individual or by a number of people using it at different times. Most of them will therefore have specs that help in performing this kind of operation. They are also designed to accommodate certain functionalities and applications.

Dedicated servers will however be fitted with significantly high specs to be able to handle much greater workloads. What makes them suitable to be used in server hosting is the fact that they are more accommodating and easily scalable. The main advantage that dedicated servers have over home PCs is the difference in capacity. It means that the home PC will not be able to deliver the same quality of service as the dedicated server.

The other main difference besides the specs of the hardware is the location of the machines. In most cases hosting servers will be located inside a data center or server room designed specifically for server hosting purposes. The server room or data centre provides sufficient security, power backup, temperature, bandwidth, controls and all other server requirements. This is to ensure that the people hosted on the server enjoy high quality and uninterrupted service.

Most of these facilities are not liable to be found in a home PC. This makes them vulnerable to frequent downtime and significantly reduces the quality of service that they offer. The dedicated server is set to operate in an environment that is specifically formulated for high quality hosting.

Very few people, if any, will accept to have their websites hosted on a home computer. For anyone seriously looking to host anything substantial, this option is not viable. It can only be used as a testing subject for hosting but not for anything beyond that. Considering how much bandwidth is required for effective hosting, not many home-based internet connections can handle it. This will obviously slow down the connection to your server and frustrate those trying to access sites you are hosting.
